Currently, there's an epidemic of youth crimes enveloping Britain with London bearing the brunt of such activity. Whether its death or murder by gun, knife or some other tool, the youths, mostly teenagers, just seem to want to assert themselves in a violent way on each other. The adults don't seem to understand but their views and opinions count for nothing in a landscape where young adults rule. This film is the gritty biography of that landscape, chronicling slices of seemingly real characters whom the events are affecting and how they resolve their conflicts. It is well written, acted and executed piece of drama cum thriller with liberal dashes of humour thrown in for good measure. Young Writer/Director/Actor Noel Clarke is already assured of a bright future, preceding Adulthood with his debut Kidulthood and with so much talent already on display; much more is expected of him. Keep your eyes peeled. In the meantime go and see Adulthood. It's the grown up thing to do!

Things have not been the same since I saw "The Happening" at the CinemaCity, Sofia, Bulgaria on Friday June, 13. I can't pass by shaking trees or see forests swaying in the wind without thinking something ominous is about to happen. And that’s not because of the date either but if I explain further I would only give away a key plot line. This is one of the things that impressed me about this film: it leaves certain stylistic elements playing in your head long after you've left the cinema. Overall it was interesting and suspenseful but the in the end I didn't feel the story was resolved well enough. It felt like a great build up with an ending that fizzled out where you were expecting a massive climax. But then again you might think differently.

I'm the first to admit liking to watch a bit of goofy silliness in a movie every now and then. I'm a big fan of "Airplane", "Scary Movie" and other similar landmark movies of the genre. Superhero Movie - which lampoons superhero films, from Superman and Batman Begins to Fantastic Four - is initially likeable. But, as it unfolds the jokes became increasingly obvious, flatter and pointless. Somehow you still find yourself chuckling but secretly wishing it had a little more depth and originality. I know seeking originality in a spoof defeats the object considering a good spoof is about imitating the best in the original. Unfortunately, this wasn't a good spoof. But it does its best to be.

If you were a fan of the TV series then you'll probably find Sex And The City the movie something of a dividend where you win the jackpot and a bonus to boot! Unfortunately, I never watched more than two episodes of the series so I rather felt I lost out in this gamble. But it's hard to see how you can lose if the fare is sex, fashion, glamour, more sex, women, humour, even more sex, love and sex upon more sex! Stylistically it felt like I was watching TV on the big screen, which is understandable given the origin, but fascinating in a weird way. For instance I kept trying to work out who (or what!) was the baddie as it wasn't always clear. But by the end you realise love plays a pivotal role but I won't spoil it for you by explaining further. You'll have to go see for yourself!

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull proved slightly disappointing. Hampered by a particularly poor script, the actors delivered plausible performances which still left you with a feeling of noticeably contrived. It wasn't all bad news however. There were several moments of real edge-of-seat excitement, notably the fight scenes particularly the ones happening near a cliff edge and inside a US army base. It's a movie you will either like or dislike but you will love the superb action sequences, cinematography and the Indiana Jones motifs and nuances, if this is your thing. Alas, this wasn't enough for me...

Iron Man had the potential to be a truly unmemorable film given its comic cartoon origin but the story, acting and special effects lifted it way above the dross mark! Indeed, it generated laughs and actually also raised socio-political awareness on the use of guns, weapons and corporate responsibility. But for 126 minutes it was an action packed express train, hurtling along at a cracking pace. Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Pal throw, Terence Howard and Jeff Bridges all deliver key, watchable performances in a strong ensemble we're sure will reunited for Iron Man 2!

What Happens in Vegas... (2008)
If you like your films as light, fluffy and predictable as a romantic novel, then "What Happens In Vegas..." is right up your street. It is deftly predictable, straddling the fine line between comedy and fantasy while selling glamorous Las Vegas and the kind of 'crazy' things you can get up to there. Thus, it intermittently titillates your funny bone while largely bypassing your intellectual mind zone, but with disarming charm and aplomb. Your eyes, however, will be glad to watch Cameron Diaz whose gorgeous looks sizzles in a performance that suits her obvious fun personality. For the opposite sex Ashton Kutcher is eye candy with a performance that delivers just the right amount of candy. Together they generate so much sweetness you may want to dilute the whole broth with a jug of cool water or suffer the consequence of being overwhelmed with excess cloy!

My expectations were low on "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" especially since all the pre-screen hype had been laced around comedian Russell Brand's appearance in the film. Then my 14 year old niece MB dubbed the film as "retarded", whatever that meant. But sitting through the 111 minutes long film was an enjoyable, laugh out loud mixture of fun, unpredictability and comic drama. It left me with a real feel good factor and tried as hard as I could I couldn't pin-point any "retarded" moments in the film at all. Except for the times Brand refers to his rectum and sexual acts involving that part of the anatomy. Personally, I don't particularly appreciate films that cannot sustain an interest without making references to such areas. But, thankfully, these moments were few and the laughs were plenty, so the overall ambience was not marred by pandering to base instincts. There were also several real emotional heights that made you feel for the characters and their predicaments. This, for a comedy, is some feat. It heightened the tension and accentuated the drama that much more. In the end, chances are, you will leave the cinema with key moments replaying in your head forcing you to be Remembering Sarah Marshall for far longer than your initial expectations!

The title of the movie Deception is very apt. Despite a taught, suspenseful build up and middle, it petered out to a rather unsatisfactory ending. I felt, in fact, felt deceived by its rambling, unconvincing dénouement. It seemed as if the real ending for this otherwise visually beautiful detective, sex thriller, was left somewhere on the cutting room floor. What we got served was a version to get pass the censors, deliberately confusing to lend credence to its title. Maybe that was the whole point: to hoodwink us, the audience. It worked!

When any film delivers much less than it promised the result can only be disappointing. Thus, this was the case with "Meet the Spartans", a gay-fest masquerading as a parody of the gladiatorial epic "300". Although there were a few truly deft touches in the film, the overall feeling was that it was probably hijacked by a gay editor who simply used the exercised to please himself by including loads of unnecessary latent homosexual scenes in it to raise a laugh. This diluted the impact it might have otherwise had because some scenes were simply not funny, and garnishing them with gay erotica, only highlighted the poor execution. Maybe this will appeal to outwardly gay people (and their friends) but as a piece of entertainment it did nothing for me.

You feel a little apprehensive sitting through what is essentially a cartoon but once you relax and allow yourself to be transported along by the story and the onscreen action you are in for quite a ride. "Horton Hears a Who!" zips along at a cracking pace and the well defined, eye-popping CGI-animated characters seamlessly blur the line between real and pixel reality. And, all the hallmarks of good entertainment are there too! The drama, suspense, danger, action, despicable villainy and reluctant heroism centre points engages your emotion from the opening frame to the final credit. You end up bouncing out of the cinema humming the end music having digested the film's central theme that "a person is a person, no matter how small." Definitely recommended but go with an open mind and spirit. Oh, and take along a suitably aged child if you can: they'll love it too!

If you go expecting a Jurassic Park-like epic laced primarily around huge scenes of realistic prehistoric creatures, you may be disappointed. Although there are such moving things in the film they serve to set and keep the central story in context. In truth several themes are intricately explored in this engagingly entertaining film which although a fun experience somehow leaves you wanting more but glad for the little you received!

Vantage Point has an advantage over other films because it tells its story from five different perspectives. The action is fast-paced throughout and in the end you may not feel there was a great deal of substance but you can't fail to admire the style!

I'm going to use this film as the measuring stick by which I tell potential girlfriends: "An older version of Juno is my idea of a perfect woman!" The qualities are obvious: smart, funny, resourceful, focussed, progressive and sensitive. Funnily enough just like the film itself!
