I was challenged by a friend to answer the question: “Is it possible to love and hate something (or someone) at the same time?”

My initial response was no because love and hate are on opposite sides of the spectrum. In reality they are the same coin only existing on different sides: heads or tails. But they evoke strongly opposite emotions.

It is definitely possible to love someone or something but hate what they do or how they are. We expect so much from the people we love.

Sometimes these expectations are unreasonable and/or unrealistic. When they fall short for whatever reason we feel disappointed or angry, leading to this feeling perceived as hatred.

And this is where it gets complicated because when you love someone you want good for them; yet when you hate them, you want to hurt them or for bad things to happen to them.

It is also the case that the person you love the most is the same one who can hurt you the most and it’s only because you love them that they can hurt you.

Maybe the real answer is that yes it is possible to love and hate someone but not necessarily at the same time!
