Lights Dimmed

In the space of a few days two leading lights of African culture have gone out.
First was comedian Bernie Mac, real name Bernard Jeffrey McCullough, who passed away on Saturday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois after losing his battle with pneumonia, at the relatively young age of 50.
Next went Isaac Hayes, composer of [...]

Beyoncé’s Lighter Shade Of Pale!

It seems like singer Beyoncé is definitely worth it! To be given the “make me look white treatment” that is! At least L’Oréal, the cosmetics conglomerate for whom the singer is currently fronting an advertising campaign, seems to think so.
They are under fire for turning Beyoncé’s face white in an ad campaign, causing all sorts [...]

Tyra Banks Is…Michelle Obama!

Supermodel Tyra Banks stepped into the shoes of US Presidential hopeful first lady Michelle Obama in the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine.
The photo shoot captures Banks beside a Barack Obama look-alike model in an Oval Office scene. In another, Banks gives him a fist bump while confetti flies.
Tyra is certainly plausible as Michelle although [...]

Televising The Revolution!

In an earlier era Gil Scot Heron declared: “the revolution will not be televised!” How very wrong could he be!
How was he to foresee the internet and the impact it would have on how we communicate, choose partners to date and present our ideas? Yes, modern technology continues to set the standard by which everything [...]

Prayer For Obama

This is the kind of image you will never see on mainstream television such as the Fox Network!
Here we see a good example of the Black community literally rallying around one of its own with US presidential hopeful Barack Obama surrounded by members of the A.M.E. Zion Church in Atlanta, apparently praying for his success [...]

No Ray Of Sunshine

There was bound to be monumental fallout if the appointment by new London Mayor Boris Johnson, of former prisoner governor and Church of England clergyman Ray Lewis as his deputy, didn’t work out. And so today, July 4, 2008, there is.
Now the appointment which was seen as a great strategic move and statement of intent [...]

Daddy Diddy’s Twins!

It’s not often you get a warm, favourable glimpse into the world of a successful Black person within the mainstream. Usually, the image (or images) they seem to prefer to show is/are of Black stars on the wrong side of the law. They just love an O. J. Simpson or Michael Jackson situation!
It is great, [...]

Flying With Naomi Campbell!

I’ve never really understood supermodel Naomi Campbell’s public persona. On one level I could quite easily dismiss her as being yet another attractive but vain attention seeker who plies a profession where she regularly flashes her flesh publicly for money.
Outside of polite circles they have a term for that. In the world of fashion they [...]

Lee Spikes Clint Eastwood’s Day!

Movie actors/directors Spike Lee and Clint Eastwood have been having a little row in the media lately. Lee kicked it off by commenting on Clint’s failure to include significant scenes of black soldiers in his films about the Battle of Iwo Jima.
The Do The Right Thing director insists African-American soldiers should have been included more [...]

Hilary Clinton Is Not A Woman I Dig

If there was any justice in the world Hilary Clinton would not have been a 2008 US Presidential contender. At worst she should be in prison serving time for her part in the world’s biggest civil fraud case.
At best she would already have been mortally crippled by a series of damaging political scandals and would [...]
